Vágar Airport (FAE) is the only airport in the Faroe Islands and the main gateway for all air travel to and from the country. It is located on the island of Vágar, about one nautical mile east of Sørvágur and approximately 46 kilometers west of Tórshavn. The airport serves as the primary base for the Faroese flag carrier, Atlantic Airways.
Originally constructed by the British Royal Engineers during World War II, the airport has evolved from a military facility into a modern civilian hub. Today, it supports scheduled, charter, and cargo flights, with regular connections to Copenhagen and seasonal routes to other European cities. Despite increasing traffic, the airport remains small and efficient, offering a calm travel experience with short waiting times. Ground transportation is provided by regular bus services linking the airport to the capital via the Vágatunnilin tunnel. The airport is operated in cooperation with Faroese and Danish authorities and places a strong emphasis on sustainable development, energy efficiency, and future-ready infrastructure to support continued growth.
