About Qatar
Qatar, pronounced ‘kuh-TAR’, is located on the Arabian Peninsula. It extends into the Arabian Gulf. The first signs of human settlement in Qatar date back to the 6th millennium BCE. For many years, the country was home to Bedouin tribes and small fishing villages. It was influenced by Arab tribes, Portuguese explorers, Ottoman leaders, and the esteemed al-Thani family. The leadership of the al-Thani family has greatly shaped Qatar's heritage. In 1940, the discovery of oil in the Dukhan Field changed Qatar's fate. This event transformed its economy from pearling, fishing, and trade to one of the wealthiest nations in the world.
