Great Journeys New Zealand is the tourism division of KiwiRail that unites its three iconic Scenic train journeys: the award-winning TranzAlpine (Christchurch to Greymouth), the Northern Explorer (Auckland to Wellington), and the Coastal Pacific (Picton to Christchurch). Aligned with KiwiRail's mission to create stronger connections for a better New Zealand, Great Journeys New Zealand has expanded its rail tourism offerings with a variety of short break packages and multi-day guided tours. Designed for both domestic and international visitors, these packages encourage travellers to step off the beaten track and immerse themselves in each region’s unique attractions, including activities, food and beverage experiences, and pre-organised accommodation.

Drawing on more than 150 years of rail heritage, Great Journeys New Zealand is more than just transportation—it is KiwiRail’s scenic tourism brand created to showcase the country’s landscapes, culture, and hospitality in a relaxed and immersive way. In 2022, the brand refreshed its identity and broadened its offerings to feature distinctive rail tours, curated packages, and short breaks that link iconic train journeys with ferry rides, guided experiences, and regional stays across both islands. The core routes include the Northern Explorer, known for scenic views of Tongariro National Park and the Raurimu Spiral; the Coastal Pacific, which runs along the South Island’s dramatic coastline; and the TranzAlpine, a celebrated traverse of the Southern Alps. Throughout all experiences, Great Journeys New Zealand emphasizes authentic local connections, regional food and culture, warm hospitality, and a commitment to sustainability and community engagement, bringing travellers closer to the people and places that define New Zealand.
