Global Sustainable Tourism Council

ABOUT

The Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) is an independent, neutral, nonprofit organization established in 2010. Its purpose is to create and manage global standards for sustainable travel and tourism. These standards serve as the world’s baseline for sustainability in tourism, guiding both public policy and industry practices.

The Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) sets and revises international sustainability standards for tourism, called the GSTC Criteria, which address four core areas: sustainable management, local socioeconomic benefits, protection of cultural heritage, and minimizing environmental harm. These standards are tailored for destinations, industry sectors (like hotels and tour operators), MICE (meetings and events), and attractions.

GSTC operates as a global, virtual nonprofit organization with a diverse membership that includes governments, UN agencies, travel companies, NGOs, and individuals. Rather than certifying businesses or destinations directly, GSTC accredits independent certification bodies to ensure impartial and credible third-party audits based on its Criteria.

GSTC also offers training, supports policy development for destinations, manages an Integrity Programme to monitor certified bodies, and promotes best practices in sustainable tourism. Membership is open to all but does not imply endorsement, and funding comes from donations, sponsorships, and membership fees.
